Why I love wearing high-top sneakers to work.
Do you know what I love about working on the agency side? I can wear high-top sneakers to work!
The sneakers that I love the most are the ones that are bright, chunky and basically attention-grabbing. To me, sneakers are a wicked way to express yourself and your individuality.
Being relatively new to this whole planning thing, I’ve started to really think about why I’m drawn to things/brands/places and not others. It’s just become a habit of mine to figure out what the emotional reasoning is behind my own, (and other people’s) behaviours.
So, I was staring at my sneakers the other day (feeling pretty fresh2death I might add), and I realised why I loved wearing them so much. Here’s why:
When I put my sneakers on and stroll into work, I feel like I’m sticking it to ‘The Man’.
Seriously, I do. I walk past the train station each morning, and I see lots of people dressed for work. They’re all suited up, wearing the typical black, grey, and the odd navy. And as I stomp past in my Nike high-tops, I kind of get this feeling of superiority. It’s weird, I know! But I kind of feel like I’m zigging when everyone else is zagging. That I’m being the exception to the rule. Rather than work in a job that I hate, or in a company where I feel like I’m just another number, instead I feel like I’ve escaped the wrath of the ‘corporate machine’. I’m doing what I want to do. I being who I want to be. I feel like I’m sticking it to The Man.
